The Murcielago LP640 is the latest version of Lamborghini’s mid-engine V12 powered sports car. The Murcielago was revised for 2007 and the name was changed to Murcielago LP640, with the nomenclature derived from the Italian description of the engine position—longitudinale posteriore—and its power output of 640 horsepower. The Murcielago replaced the Diablo in 2002 as the latest model of the line of mid-engine, V12 sports cars from Lamborghini that began in the 1960s with the Miura, followed in succession by the Countach and the Diablo. Lamborghini's first vehicles were tractors, as company founder Ferrucio Lamborghini filled the acute needs of Italian farmers recovering from World War II. The first Lamborghini sports car was the 350GTV which debuted in 1963. After a number of different owners, the company is now solely owned by Audi AG.

The 2008 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 features the Lamborghini Ad Personam personalization program that allows owners to individualize their Lamborghini at the factory. The limited-edition Lamborghini Reventon debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show finished in Marrone Apus matte brown paint, the first Lamborghini offered with a matte finish. Marrone Apus is now available on the LP640 through Ad Personam a matte finish between black and brown with pigment in the paint to create an iridescent look that gives off gold reflections in sunlight. Other additions to Ad Personam include a new shade of light blue, Blu Cepheus, inspired by the transparency of polar ice with the same iridescent qualities as the Marrone Apus matte paint which presents a more primary blue in sunlight. For the interior, a new brown Alcantara known as Marrone Gaia is added. Vultumna is an Italian leather from the Tuscany region and in keeping with Tuscany’s leather tanning tradition the leather is untreated, inspired by the natural leather of horse saddles and the color will change over time.
